Yom Kippur, commonly known as the Day of Atonement is the tenth day of the month of Tishrei. This is the most solemn day on the Jewish calendar, concluding a 40-day period of introspection and self-reflection. The most prominent aspect of this observance is a complete fast for the entire day. After our morning service, we fill the afternoon with studies of the book of Jonah, and times of intercessory prayer. Before sunset, we hold a Nehilah (concluding service) and Yizkor (memorial for the deceased), after which we hear the final call of the shofar and break our fast together with a traditional non-meat meal.
